Cemetery Trustees
Feb 5, 2013

Present: Ruth Hammen, Scott Marston, Fred Shaw

Contract: The 2013 maintenance contract between the Town of Chichester and Steve’s Quality Services was signed at this meeting. Since the RFP was put out for 2013, the Trustees will need to add Morrill Cemetery to the list. Steve will visit this cemetery and get back to the Trustees with prices for cleanup and mowing.

Leavitt: Even though there has been little snow this season, Trustees elected to chain the gate anyway. The ground has become soft and it was observed that vehicles had been entering the cemetery over several inches of snow.

Cemetery Names: Two cemeteries, Shaw and Edmunds/Stanyan, have inappropriate names. There are no Shaw’s in the Shaw Cemetery and only came upon this name since there were Shaw residences on both sides. Earlier, these residences were occupied by True families of which there is a True burial in the Cemetery. The Trustees propose changing the name to True Cemetery.

The Edmunds/Stanyan Cemetery is clearly divided into two parts. One part is private and includes Edmunds and Stanyan burials. The other is older and has been referred to in documents as “The Burial Ground”. Trustees would like to name this part separately. Ruth will get in touch with Terry Knowles concerning the process.

Abandonment: The notice has been placed in the Concord Monitor to abandon several cemeteries and the sixty-day waiting period will be up March 15. A public hearing must be scheduled within the next 30 days to hear public input before the process becomes official. Nancy will be notified to schedule a hearing.

Goals: Trustees decided to focus on straightening stones as priority. Scott will contact Steve to see if he might be interested in this project. The Trustees will focus on Pineground, Leavitt, and Brown cemeteries.
